Dusty Plasmas: Experiments


  • PSL has two active devices dedicated to dusty plasma studies.
    • DPX - Dusty Plasma eXperiment
    • 3DPX - 3D-Dusty Plasma eXperiment
  • All devices use argon dc glow discharge plasmas.
  • Alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2) microparticles ranging from 1 to 40 microns in diameter have been used in experiments.
  • The PSL uses 2D- and stereo-PIV(particle image velocimetry) techniques to measure the microparticle transport and to determine the velocity space distribution function.
  • Experiments explore particle transport, waves, and the thermodynamics of dusty plasmas.
